WINCHESTER — A town resident is accused of hitting and seriously injuring a 16-year-old boy with a truck on Warwick Road Saturday night and then fleeing the scene.

Andrew P. Schultz, 36, of Winchester is charged by the Winchester Police Department with felony reckless conduct and conduct after an accident in connection with the incident, according to a news release the department sent Monday night. The release notes that additional charges may be forthcoming.

Police initially identified Schultz as a person of interest in the case and found a truck at his Old Hinsdale Road residence in the village of Ashuelot matching the description of the one believed to have hit the teenager, the release says.

The truck was seized as evidence and impounded, and Schultz was later arrested, police said.

Schultz was released on $10,000 personal recognizance bail and is scheduled to appear in Cheshire County Superior Court in Keene August 9, the release says.

The teenager, who lives in Winchester, was walking south on Warwick Road when he was hit from behind by a motor vehicle, whose driver fled the scene, according to an earlier news release.

The release says that the boy suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries. He was taken by ambulance to Cheshire Medical Center in Keene and then flown by helicopter to Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon.

As of Sunday evening, Winchester police said that the boy remained in critical condition.

Citing the boy’s father, Winchester police Lt. Mike T. Tollett said by text message Monday night that the boy’s “spirits are up but obviously the doctors are keeping a close eye on him.”

The teenager described the vehicle to emergency responders as a dark-colored truck with a light bar, Winchester police Sgt. Dean Wright said Sunday afternoon.

A person driving on Warwick Road at the time of the crash came forward to police with a video from his in-car camera system that shows the vehicle suspected to have hit the boy, according to a news release the Winchester Police Department sent Sunday evening.

Wright said Sunday that the department wasn’t releasing the boy’s name because it’s an ongoing investigation.
