1. Single-Trip Permits

These single-use permits remain valid for 5 days.

  • Oversize-only
  • Overweight-only
  • Oversize/Overweight
  • House Move
  • Sealed Container – Max 100,000 lbs. GVW
  • Mobile Home – Max 16′ wide, 16′ tall
  • Portable Building/Boat

2. Annual Permits

Vehicle Specific – The VIN on the Annual Permits MUST match the VIN on the transport vehicle.

  • Oversize and/or Overweight – You will need a routing authorization permit to cover gross weights of over 100,000 lbs. during operation. Routing authorizations must be issued from the permit office to accompany the annual permit. Once acquired, the permit must stay in the vehicle.

  • Mobile Homes – Mobile homes are allowed to reach a maximum width of 14′ and a maximum height of 14′. You will need a routing authorization permit for mobile homes between 12′ and 14′ wide. A routing authorization from the permit office must accompany the annual permit.

  • Portable Buildings / Boats – This includes vehicles or a combination of a tractor and a trailer wider than 12′.

  • Sealed Containers – The GVW can be up to 100,000 lbs. Open-top containers should be considered on a case-by-case basis. All trucks transporting sealed containers must carry a bill of lading and an equipment interchange report or receipt in the cab of the truck.

Operating Time

Oversize loads can only move during daylight hours.

Please note: Travel is not authorized during major holidays and holiday weekends.

All pieces of buckets and counterweights, when removable, must be removed by the operator. Blades or buckets, which may protrude from the trailer, don’t need to be removed. However, they must be loaded at the rear of the trailer.

Vehicles over 100,000 lbs. GVW must have a routing authority. In addition, they must have proper insurance based on the annual permit limits.

  • 40′ straight trucks
  • 57′ trailers
  • 53’6″ on roads less than 12′ wide
  • 28’6″ double trailers
  • 85′ overall (unless the trailer exceeds 57′)
Weight:

  • 80,000 lbs. of gross weight
  • Single Axle – 20,000 lbs.
  • Tandem Axle – 34,000 lbs.
  • Tridem Axle – 42,000 lbs.
Width: 8’6″ (8′ on lanes less than 12′ wide)
Overhang: 5′ front, 5′ rear
Note: 60′ of structural steel is exempt from permit and escort requirements.

PERMIT LIMITS

Length:

  • 165′ (maximum overhang 20′)
Width:

  • 16′ (over 16′ cannot use Interstate Highways)
Height: 15’5″
Overhang: 20′ of rear overhang is the maximum

 

Axles

5 axles- 110,000 lbs.
6 axles -122,000 lbs.
7 axles – 142,000 lbs.
8 axles – 150,000 lbs.
Maximum axle weight limits:

  • Steer – 14,000 lbs.
  • Single – 22,000 lbs.
  • Tandem – 44,000 lbs.
  • Tridem – 66,000 lbs.


All weights are subject to bridge analysis. Loads weighing over 120,000 lbs. on Interstates or 90,000 lbs. off-Interstate are considered superloads.

3. ESCORTS

Length: With Legal trailer length Over 90′ – 1 rear escort

Over 125’ – 2 escorts (front and rear)

Height: Over 15’6″* – 1 escort with high pole

*may be needed at lower heights depending on the route

Width: Over 12′-14′ – 1 front escort on two-lane roads, or 1 rear escort on multi-lane highways.

over 14′ – 2 escorts (rear and front)

Overhang: Over 5′ rear overhang – 1 rear escort

Over 9’11” front overhang – 1 front escort

Bucket or Blade Rule: If a bucket or blade protrudes past sides of the trailer, then only 1 escort is needed.

No escort is needed if outriggers are used to prevent a bucket or blade from protruding from the sides of the trailer.

SIGNS, FLAGS & LIGHTS

“Oversize Load” signs must be placed on the front and rear of any overwidth or overlength vehicle. Furthermore, flags must be placed at the front and rear corners of any overdimensional load or vehicle. Over 4rear overhangs require lights at night. Over 5′ rear overhangs require a permit because they cannot operate at night. There are no sign or flag requirements for overweight only or overweight only loads.

RESTRICTED TRAVEL

Loads 120’ to 150’ in length are restricted from 9:00 A.M.–3:00 P.M. Monday through Friday. The permitted vehicle or combination of vehicles and loads shall not travel in foggy weather, snow, ice, or any other time when there is not adequate light to render clearly visible people and vehicles on the highway at a distance of 500’.

Oversize loads can move during daylight hours only. Oversize loads are not allowed movement on:

  • New Year’s Day
  • Memorial Day
  • Independence Day
  • Labor Day
  • Thanksgiving Day
  • Christmas Day
