It’s a new year, which means it’s time to make sure you have all your paperwork in order! Running a trucking business is tough, and nothing is more difficult than making sure you have all your filings in order. Luckily, we here at Overweight Permits have a lot of experience with the world of trucking. As a result, we’ve compiled a handy list here to help you remember everything you need!

IRP & IFTA

Every year, interstate truckers have to renew their registration with these two major programs. The first, the International Registration Plan, or IRP, ensures that your truck’s registration is valid across multiple states and even into Canada. Without it, you could be subject to an out-of-service violation in states that aren’t your base state! The second, the International Fuel Tax Agreement, or IFTA, does a similar thing but for fuel taxes. Together, these filings help the U.S. and Canada keep their roads clean, robust, and functional.

State-Specific Mileage Permits

If you intend to haul goods in certain states, you have to maintain registration with a few state-specific mileage programs. These programs make you file and/or renew your registration periodically. So, if you haul goods in one of the four states that have these programs (also called weight-distance taxes), then make sure your mileage permits are up-to-date!

UCR

The Unified Carrier Registration (UCR) program is an annual registration that all interstate trucking companies have to complete. Hopefully, you remembered to renew your registration before the new year, as it’s due on December 31! Even if you did, though, this is a good time to set a reminder for this year. Renewal opens on October 1, and there’s no reason to wait until the very end of the year to renew your UCR. Keep it in mind towards the tail end of 2023!

Other Trucking Filings

This list is by no means an exhaustive list of what you need to do to keep your trucking business running smoothly. For example, this list doesn’t include very necessary things like your biennial update, as that comes once every two years and depends on the carrier. It doesn’t include your truck insurance, which you can always look to improve. If you own a trucking company, you need to keep track of all the filings that your company needs to complete to succeed in the cutthroat world of freight hauling.
