If you are considering a business in trucking/transportation, you may have come across this term of the USDOT number. You may have then found yourself thinking, do I need a USDOT number? The answer depends on a few different things but is very likely yes! To understand better, let us clarify what a USDOT number is and help you determine if you require one for your operations.

To start, what is a USDOT number?

A USDOT number is a unique identification number assigned by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, otherwise known as the FMCSA. This number is essential for businesses that engage in commercial transportation activities. It acts as a permit that must be obtained before commencing operations as a commercial carrier. Essentially, you can think of it as something like your driver’s license or passport. It holds important information associated with your trucking business. The USDOT number serves multiple purposes, including tracking safety records and ensuring compliance with federal regulations. It is a key identifier that allows anyone to access information about your company’s safety history and regulatory compliance.

There are specific criteria set by the FMCSA that determine whether you need a USDOT number. Here’s a breakdown of those requirements:

  • Vehicle Weight: If your truck has a gross vehicle weight, combined weight, or weight rating of 10,000 pounds or more, you are required to have a USDOT number.
  • Passenger Transport: If your business involves transporting more than 8 passengers (including the driver) for compensation, a USDOT number is necessary. Similarly, if you transport more than 15 passengers (including the driver) but do not receive compensation, you also need a USDOT number.
  • Hazardous Materials: If your company handles hazardous materials in interstate commerce, a USDOT number is required.
  • Interstate and International Commerce: You need a USDOT number if your operations involve:
    • Transporting goods or passengers between two points within a state through another state or outside the U.S.
    • Moving between a place in one state and a place outside that state (including international destinations).
    • Engaging in trade or transportation within a state that starts or ends outside the state or country.

Do you meet any of the above?

If you answered yes, then you definitely need a USDOT number. The process of acquiring this number is pretty easy and straightforward and is made even easier when you file for your USDOT with a filing agent. We recommend the agency DOT Operating Authority, as we have found that our customers have the best success when working with them and are able to obtain their other important trucking filings at the same time!
