If you are a truck driver or operate a commercial fleet, the Unified Carrier Registration (UCR) is one filing you cannot afford to overlook. Introduced as part of a federal law in 2005, the UCR program requires commercial vehicle operators engaged in interstate travel to pay an annual registration fee. This fee is determined by the size of your fleet. Essentially, the more vehicles you operate, the higher the fee.

The UCR is not just another piece of paperwork, it is a mandatory permit for those crossing state lines in commercial vehicles. Operating without a current and active UCR filing can lead to fines and penalties, making it essential to stay compliant.

Who Needs to File a UCR?

If you are an owner/operator or manage a company that runs commercial vehicles across state lines, chances are you need to file a UCR. Specifically, the requirement applies to vehicles that engage in interstate commerce and meet one or more of the following criteria:

  • A gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of over 10,000 pounds,
  • Designed to transport more than 10 passengers,
  • Marked for transporting hazardous materials.

If your vehicle does not meet these conditions, such as being under 10,000 pounds and not used for hazardous materials or passenger transport, you are exempt from the UCR.
